About This Lesson

This lesson will require students to call back to previous lessons learned in 6th grade where emphasis was placed on proportional relationships. Students had practice using tables of values to graph linear equations, furthering their understanding of constants of proportionality. In this unit, students will form a clear connection to the concept of linear equations. They will explore them in the form: y = mx + b. Students will have plenty of opportunities throughout the unit to model mathematics, the fourth Standard for Mathematical Practice of the Common Core State Standards. The lessons outlined in this unit will help students to recognize a proportional relationship, see how proportional relationships and linear equations are related, identify what a slope tells us about a line, identify how slope and unit rate are related, an identify what the y - intercept means. Student will practice demonstrating these skills in real-life situation examples.

Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways.
Use similar triangles to explain why the slope ? is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation ? = ?? for a line through the origin and the equation ? = ?? + ? for a line intercepting the vertical axis at ?.
